Eco-nomics, Anne M. Mulcahy

Thursday 3:15 Making Things
Anne M. Mulcahy is an amazing person. In 1976 she began selling copiers for Xerox. 24years of being a increasingly good salesman later, she was promoted CEO of the company. Through a period of eight years, Anne has reinvented the way Xerox makes and sells their product. Now, not only is she at the head of Xerox, she is also the director of Target, Citigroup, The Washington Post and a board member of Catalyst (a non-profit organization supporting women in business).
She talked mostly about how her business continues producing products that have a greener impact on our earth. She talked about a printer that actually erases ink instead of printing it. This idea is a great way to save paper.
I got a lucky chance to ask her a question: "Most of the people in this room this morning said that my education was our most underused resources.I have 15 years or so of school education left. If you were my high school/college advisor, how would you plan my education so I could be a helpful member of not just America but the world as well?" She simply answered that I shouldn't minimize my options, and keep my doors open. She told me that I shouldn't lock into anything yet because I still have the rest of my life to decided what I'm really interested in. She did say she hopes more and more young women like me look into math and engineering.

A full day....

Yeah! Charlie let me use his computer! Now I can write a long and thorough blog! Well actually we are aI can't because we haven't really done anything yet, given that its only 10' o 'clock. Today is boing to be very mellow. We're probably going to be interviewing people on the street, finding out how they feel about the upcoming inauguration. Hopefully we can find somebody who had tea with Martin Luther King Jr. That would be really awesome.Right now, we are in Starbucks drinking coffee and trying to get internet. Ken and I are sharing a Chai Latte, a Mighty Mango juice, and a doughnut, and its really yummy. I'm trying to read the poems written on the wall of Starbucks. One is about fire, and a siren, and there coffee, and color, and passion. For my life I can't understand what the heck its supposed to mean. I'm not really sure what else to talk about. YAY! I think Ken just connected to the internet (its taken her a while). Now, we can work on our math homework.

Later that day...

Today was anything but mellow. After we left Starbucks, we walk about half a mile to a really old restaurant called Ebbits were I had my first (and last) taste of goat cheese. But it was really cool, because it had all these historic artifacts from the 1800's. Then we walked in the freezing cold for two hours around the mall. Me, Ken, Ofie, Chuck, the parental units, Austin and Charlie were freezing, but then we got hot chocolate and it was better. I then interviewed someone from Fox News. Finally we went to Martins Bar. It was so popular a while ago, that Kennedy proposed to his wife there!!! That was a really awesome experience, so awesome that I almost bought suspenders. Then we got some news that Obama was coming off a train in Union Station. So we went there and we went to were the police men were telling us he would be. But it all was a big stinken diversion. So we missed him. *sigh* Oh well, at least I can say that I was in the same building as him (which is true). And thats pretty much it. Oh yeah! I almost forgot. I interviewed these Chinese people who didn't understand what I was talking about. I asked them what Obama's slogan "Yes we Can" means to them. They answered, "Slogan? Obama will be very chilly". So ya. That is pretty much it! OK! I got to go, Charlie's computer is almost out of batteries. Bye!!!

We are one

There is so much that happened between yesterday morning and tonight, that I can't possibly explain it all. I'll just tell you about the We are One Concert. I think we woke up at about 7:00 in the morning, ate breakfast and then headed out to the Lincoln Memorial. It was crowded right when we got there (the first crowd I had seen all week). We stood in line for security for about 15 minutes, got through easily and walked towards the reflecting pool. About a third of the people who would be attending were all ready there, so considering there would be 1 million people there, we got pretty good seats. We got there 3 hours early, but the time went by really quickly. We entertained ourselves by playing cards, meeting and interviewing people around us, and playing labyrinth on Dah's iphone. It's kind of hard to believe that we were standing in the same spot that people of the famous "I have a Dream" speech were standing except instead of protesting racism, we were celebrating a black president. The concert was like a giant party. Everybody was beyond happy, everybody was singing, dancing, sharing, talking, it was unreal. As weird as this may sound, I think I will remember the concert better than I will the inauguration. Anyways! I got to go brush my teeth, its already 10! Good Night!!!

Inaguration day!

Align RightI'm so sorry that I haven't been keeping up on blogging. Its been so chaotic, I seriously haven't had any time to just sit down and blog. Here is what happened today. Chuck, Dah, Isaac and I all woke up at about 5:00 to get good spots for the inauguration and was (and still am) tired. Then we quickly got dressed in as many layers as possible and headed out the hotel door. A first the streets seemed deserted, but slowly more people started to trickle in and before I knew it there were people everywhere. Then we walked into a giant tunnel that seemed to never end, but it was it was warm. :) We popped out of the tunnel into a giant mass of people. Slowly we trudged to the security line (it took about an hour and a half to get there) and got checked to make sure we weren't carrying bombs and stuff like that. Then we tumbled to our spots for the inauguration and tried to stay awake. We were forced to stand up the whole time, because it was so packed but it kept us warm. (: The ceremony was nice and there were no huge distractions, besides the really loud and talkative lady behind us. They had a boys choir, a military group, and YoYo Ma preform which was cool. After the ceremony, we tried to get to the reflecting pool so we could "ice skate" across to the capitol. And

I'm extremely excited, and here are some pictures of my friend and I showing our excitment

A day before DC

Yay! Its only a day before Teen Press is off to DC!!! I'm extremely excited because I have no idea what opportunities this trip will bring. Also what's better that hanging out with your friends, while meeting new people at the same time? I really want to see what kind of people we'll get to see and maybe even interview! It's also very fantasical that we will be part of history. Hehe, we'll "go down in history" like Rudolf. Yay! Now I can relate my self to a reindeer!! Electives over. See you tomarrow!!
